The Spring has sprung and the warm weather has brought so much natural beauty to the Angel K Love Project farm! One of the most beautiful things that is growing at our farm is the groups of kids in Foster Care coming here. We were thrilled to have had 5 beautiful teenage girls from Under One Sky Village Foundation come to the farm for the day to enjoy some holistic therapies such as nature therapy, Equine therapy, and garden therapy!
Under One Sky is a nonprofit that provides summer camps and year-round empowerment programs to enrich the lives of youth in foster care in the mountains of Western North Carolina. In 2021, the AKLP will provide Under One Sky a free location to host a Teen Empowerment Program called Passages to 16 and 17 year old girls in Foster Care three times this year. We are also providing them free Equine activities and nature-based activities such as gardening, creekside activities, exposure to farm animals, and more.
At the beginning of May, these 5 teenage girls from Under One Sky spent 4-hours on our farm. They started out with spending some time with our two therapy pigs named Barbie Q Bacon and Dolly Porken. From there, we all took a nice 7-min walk down to our creek and gather in a circle to get to know each other, and get to know each of their goals that they wanted to work on together this year.
After that, we all walked back up to the barn and the girls were able to spend 1.5 hours with one of our Equine Specialists Sara Gibbens and her magical horse named Luna. Two out of five teen girls had never been around a horse, and they shared to us at the beginning of the day that they were actually scared of horses. But after about 30-minutes of wonderful Horsemanship instructions from our Equine Specialist, each of the girls had the courage to do a variety of things with Luna. They each learned how to safely walk entirely around Luna, they brushed her, cleaned her hooves, scratched her in her favorite spots, and they each learned how to properly lead her through the barn and outside around her horse trailer. By the end of their time with Luna they all loved her. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow in such a short time frame. Horses have a way with working their magic with kids, and that's why we love them!
Lastly, we ended this lovely time together with one of our AKLP Board Members Judy Peacock. Judy volunteered to teach the girls about flowers and herbs so they could grow their own at home! She helped each of the girls plant their seeds of choice in a small garden pot and gave them all detailed instructions on how to grow their plant at home. With each seed, the girls were encouraged to also plant their “seeds of intentions and goals” for the year. Remembering that like a seed, their goals and intentions need to be cared for, loved, and given a lot of attention (just like sun & water) for it to grow. So, part of their homework was to bring their pots back so they can share their growing experiences (both plant and goals) to the group when they come back.
We are so happy the the Angel K Love Project therapeutic farm can provide a safe sanctuary of a love and support for teen girls in foster care! We are all looking forward to having them back to our farm again in August!❤️🐴
